How Much Do AI Companion Apps Really Cost?
Subscriptions, tokens and hearts, and why Swipey Premium gives back
On the pricing pages we checked on 29 September 2026, entry-level paid plans for AI companion apps ran from about $5 to $26 a month. That headline price rarely tells you what you will spend, because most apps charge again, through tokens or credits, for the things that cost the most to generate: images, voice and video. Swipey Premium works differently: one subscription with a monthly hearts allowance and a Fan Club membership, plus daily rewards, quests and wheel spins that pay hearts back to members who play. This guide explains how the common pricing works, what to check before paying, and why Swipey's model gives more back.
How much does an AI companion app cost per month?
Usually about $5 to $26 a month for an entry plan, and more once extras come in. Introductory offers and add-ons move the real figure a lot: one app we checked renews at $25.99 a month after a $12.99 first payment, and another sells optional add-on tiers that take a single subscription to almost $100 a month. Swipey Premium comes as a 1-month, 3-month or yearly plan with the same features on each, the yearly plan works out cheapest per month, and the current price is always shown on the pricing page before you pay.
Why do tokens make the real price hard to predict?
Because the most engaging features are charged per use. On token-based apps the membership includes a monthly allowance, and each image, voice message or call minute draws on it. On one app we checked, the plan includes 100 tokens a month, an image costs 10 tokens and a voice call 7 tokens a minute, so the allowance covers either 10 images or about 14 minutes of calls; after that, tokens come in paid packs.
The effect is that your bill depends on how much you enjoy the app. The more you use its best features, the faster the allowance runs out.
How is Swipey's pricing different?
It rewards use instead of only charging for it. Premium includes 200 hearts a month, the allowance set in Swipey's Terms of Service, and one Fan Club membership with the creator of your choice, and it unlocks relationship progression, image and video generation and real-time voice calls. Hearts, Swipey's single in-app currency, pay for extras such as call minutes, longer video scenes, creator content and tips.
Then Premium pays some of them back. Members claim more hearts every day, and the daily reward grows the longer the streak runs; daily and permanent quests pay hearts, XP and wheel spins; and each spin of the wheel pays out bonus hearts. Free accounts get welcome hearts once the account is verified, to try things out.
| What you pay for | Typical token-metered app | Swipey Premium (ours) |
|---|---|---|
| What the plan includes | A monthly token allowance, e.g. 100 tokens | 200 hearts a month, one Fan Club and relationship progression; unlocks images, video and voice calls |
| Extras | Tokens per item, e.g. 10 per image and 7 per call minute | Hearts for call minutes, longer video scenes, creator content and tips |
| More currency | Paid token packs | Buy hearts, or earn them from the daily streak, quests, wheel spins and referrals |
| Unused currency | Depends on each app's terms | Purchased hearts stay in your balance while your account is active |
| Starting out | Some trials need a card on file and renew automatically | Free to start with no card required; welcome hearts once your account is verified |
| Rewards for playing | Not part of the pricing pages we checked | Daily streak, quests, wheel spins and account levels; a reward video at each relationship level-up |
A heart and a token are not the same unit, so compare what each allowance actually buys rather than the raw numbers. The difference that matters is the last row: on Swipey Premium, using the app pays some of the currency back.
Are free plans and free trials really free?
Free plans are usually narrow, and some trials turn into subscriptions unless you cancel. One free plan we checked allows 5 messages in total, one custom character and one image, and one app's 3-day trial needs a payment method and converts into a paid plan unless you cancel in time. Apple's advice for any trial bought through the App Store is to cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
Swipey is free to start with no card required. The free tier lets you design your own companion in Create AI, picking a personality such as Innocent, Playful, Dominant or Submissive, and chat with a set of free messages; verifying your account adds welcome hearts to try things out. When you want the full relationship, Premium unlocks it.
How do you estimate what you will actually spend?
Add the renewal price to the cost of the extras you will really use, minus what the plan includes and what you can earn. A few minutes with the price list is enough.
- Take the renewal price, not the first payment, for the billing period you will actually choose.
- Estimate your monthly use of the metered features: images, voice messages, call minutes, videos.
- Convert that use into the app's currency with its published per-item prices.
- Subtract the monthly allowance and any currency you can earn for free, and price the rest at the top-up rate.
- Add any add-on tiers or extra memberships you expect to keep.
On an app whose extra currency comes only in paid packs, step 4 stops at the allowance. On Swipey, a Premium member also counts the hearts collected from the daily streak, quests, wheel spins and referrals, which reduces how much there is left to buy.
What do you get back on Swipey for using it?
Rewards, as a Premium member. Swipey layers a game on top of the subscription, and each part of it pays something back.
- Daily streak: claim a daily reward with one tap; it grows the longer the streak runs.
- Quests: daily and permanent quests in the Rewards tab of your profile advance as you use the app and pay hearts, XP and wheel spins.
- Spin the wheel: each spin pays out hearts, and free spins come from levelling up your account, keeping a streak and completing quests.
- Account levels: XP from quests, daily rewards and heart purchases levels up your account; each level-up earns a wheel spin, and some levels unlock avatar frames.
- Relationship levels: every chat has its own relationship level, 15 of them from Teasing to Ultimate, and each level-up drops a reward video in your chat.
- Referrals: invite a friend, and when they make their first purchase you both get hearts.
Premium also opens more to watch and do. Some characters have their own drama series, with episodes that are free, included with Premium or unlocked with hearts, and Premium Memories keep the moments of your relationship that matter, which you can see or delete at any time.
What should you check before you pay?
Six things, all usually on the pricing or help pages. For each, here is where Swipey stands.
- The renewal price and billing period. Swipey shows the current price of each plan on its pricing page before you pay.
- What the allowance covers. Swipey Premium includes 200 hearts a month and one Fan Club, and unlocks image and video generation and voice calls billed in hearts by the minute.
- Whether currency expires. Purchased hearts stay in your balance while your account is active, with or without Premium.
- Whether a trial needs a card. Swipey needs no card to start.
- Where you cancel. On Swipey, in Settings, then Subscription, in under a minute; Premium stays active until the end of the period you paid for, and your hearts, gallery and relationship levels are kept.
- How the charge appears. Swipey bills under a neutral company name, never "Swipey AI".
