Depending on whom you ask, the AI companion market in 2026 is worth $24.09 billion, $48.0 billion or $49.52 billion. Yet the most-cited measurement of what people actually spend inside AI companion apps puts 2025 at a little over $120 million. The figures are not wrong so much as they measure different things: the large ones are forecasts of a broadly defined category that includes voice assistants, enterprise tools and hardware, while the small one counts consumer purchases in companion apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play. This article lines the numbers up, shows where each comes from and explains which one answers which question.

How big is the AI companion market in 2026?

Three market-research firms put the 2026 AI companion market between $24.09 billion and $49.52 billion, while the best public measurement of consumer spending in companion apps is $82 million for the first half of 2025, projected to pass $120 million for the full year. The table sets the four numbers side by side.

The three forecasts agree closely on growth: 31.3% from 2025 to 2026 in the Research and Markets report, and compound annual rates of 31.0% (Grand View Research) and 31.24% (Fortune Business Insights) for their forecast periods. Agreement on growth rates says little about agreement on scope, which is where the numbers part ways.

Why are the estimates 200 to 400 times the app-store spending?

Because they do not describe the same market. Divide the 2026 forecasts by the $120 million of observed 2025 spending and you get ratios of roughly 200 ($24.09 billion) to 410 ($49.52 billion). Three differences account for most of that gap: what counts as an "AI companion", which kinds of revenue are included, and which payment channels are measured. The dates differ as well: the forecasts are for 2026, the spending figure is a projection for 2025 made from first-half data.

What do the market-research reports count as "AI companions"?

Far more than companion apps. All three reports define an AI companion broadly, as conversational AI that offers companionship, assistance or support, which brings in voice assistants, workplace copilots, health tools and devices.

  • Research and Markets (The Business Research Company) splits the market into software, hardware and services. Its hardware segment lists microprocessors, GPUs, sensors, cameras, microphones and wearable devices; its services segment includes consulting, implementation and cloud-based AI services. It states values at "factory gate" level, and the companies it names are mostly technology giants, enterprise conversational-AI vendors and robot makers.
  • Grand View Research segments by type, application and industry vertical (consumer, businesses, healthcare, education). Most of the companies it profiles are big-tech assistant makers and enterprise-software vendors, and the recent developments it cites include a health insurer's care-navigation assistant and a diagnostics company's feature for explaining lab results.
  • Fortune Business Insights assigns 28% of the market to business use, 12% to healthcare and 8% to education, and its list of top companies includes several of the largest technology and AI-assistant firms.

In other words, a large part of each forecast is revenue that a reader asking "how big is the AI girlfriend market?" would not count at all.

What does the $120 million app-store figure measure?

Consumer spending inside companion apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play, as estimated by the app-intelligence firm Appfigures and reported by TechCrunch in August 2025. Appfigures defined companion apps as apps where users interact with premade or user-generated synthetic characters meant to embody a personality, which leaves general-purpose chatbots out.

The details are useful on their own:

  • 337 active companion apps were earning revenue, 128 of them released in 2025.
  • They generated $82 million in the first half of 2025, 64% more than in the same period of 2024, and were on track to pass $120 million for the year.
  • Lifetime consumer spending reached $221 million by July 2025, across 220 million downloads.
  • Revenue per download rose from $0.52 in 2024 to $1.18 in 2025.
  • The top 10% of apps earned 89% of the revenue, and about 10% of apps (33) had passed $1 million in lifetime spending.

Appfigures also noted that apps removed from the stores after failing to gain traction were not included.

What does neither number capture?

Mostly the web. Payments made on a website rather than through an app store do not appear in app-store data, and platforms built for adults naturally live on the web, since app-store rules exclude overtly sexual material (Apple's App Review Guidelines, guideline 1.1.4).

Traffic data shows how much of the category lives in the browser. In Andreessen Horowitz's March 2026 ranking of consumer generative-AI products, at least six companion and character-chat services appear among the top 50 websites by monthly visits, while only two of them also appear among the top 50 mobile apps by monthly active users. No public source we found measures companion revenue on the web, so the true consumer figure is above the app-store number by an amount nobody has published. To reconcile the two kinds of estimate, web spending would have to be around 200 times the app-store figure.

Can one company's market share test the estimates?

It can give a sense of scale. Fortune Business Insights gives the largest company in its ranking, a consumer character-chat platform, an 18% share of the market. Applied to its $37.73 billion estimate for 2025, that implies about $6.8 billion for a single company, roughly 30 times the $221 million that Appfigures counted as lifetime app-store spending across every companion app. That company also sells on the web, so the comparison is not exact, but no reading of the app-store data comes close.

A second yardstick is the whole AI app economy. Sensor Tower expects in-app purchase revenue from all AI apps, general-purpose assistants included, to pass $4 billion in the first half of 2026. Even doubled for a full year, that is about a sixth of Grand View Research's $48.0 billion estimate for AI companions alone. The forecasts only make sense if most of the revenue they count is not consumer spending in apps.

Which number should you quote?

Quote the figure that matches your question, and say what it measures. For consumer AI companion apps, the defensible public number is the app-store data: over $120 million of spending in 2025, up 64% year over year in the first half, with an unmeasured web share on top. The $24–50 billion forecasts describe a much wider category of conversational AI across consumers, business, healthcare and devices, and their methods sit behind paid reports.

If you need a single sentence, this one is accurate: consumers spent over $120 million in AI companion apps on the App Store and Google Play in 2025, while broader "AI companion" market forecasts that include assistants, enterprise and hardware range from $24 billion to $50 billion for 2026.

What are people paying for in an AI companion?

More than chat, and more each year: in Appfigures' data, revenue per download more than doubled between 2024 and 2025. What makes a companion worth paying for is depth, meaning a character with a real personality, a relationship that develops and things to do together, and that is what Swipey is built around.

With Swipey Premium, every chat has its own relationship level, 15 of them from Teasing to Ultimate, and each level-up drops a reward video in your chat. Premium Memories keep the moments that matter, and you can see or delete every one. Some characters have their own drama series of short episodes, and in Duels two AI characters face off over five rounds while you send gifts to back your favourite.

Swipey runs in your browser and installs on your home screen in a few taps, so there is nothing to download from an app store and your chats follow you to any device. To see it for yourself, meet your AI girlfriend, compare plans on the pricing page or read how the Swipey web app works.
