An AI girlfriend app is a chat product built around a large language model. The app wraps that model in a character description, a memory system, image and voice generators and a moderation layer, and each of those parts explains something you notice in use: why she stays in character, why she sometimes forgets, why photos and calls cost extra. This explainer takes the parts one at a time, with references to the research behind them.

What is an AI girlfriend app, technically?

A pipeline of models behind a chat window. Each time you send a message, the app assembles a prompt from the character's description, the recent conversation and anything it has saved about you, sends it to a language model, checks the reply and shows it to you. Images, voice and video come from separate models that the app calls when needed.

What model writes the replies?

A large language model: a neural network trained on large amounts of text to predict what comes next. The model has no memory of you of its own. For every reply it reads only what the app places in its context window, which model providers' documentation describes as the model's "working memory", as distinct from the data it was trained on.

That is why the rest of the app matters so much. The same model can be a helpful assistant in one product and a flirtatious companion in another, depending on the instructions and examples it is given. Research on large models showed early on that they can pick up a task from instructions and a few demonstrations supplied purely as text, without retraining (Brown et al., 2020). Companion apps rely on exactly that.

How does an app give a character a personality?

With a character prompt that travels with every message. It usually holds the character's name, appearance, backstory, personality traits, way of speaking, the relationship with you and the limits she keeps. Many apps add example lines of dialogue, because a model imitates demonstrations more reliably than it follows abstract adjectives.

Some apps also keep state outside the text, such as a relationship level that changes how warm or familiar the character is allowed to be. In most character builders, the choices you make, for example looks, personality, voice and communication style, become part of that description.

On Swipey, Create AI lets you build your own AI girlfriend and pick her personality (Innocent, Playful, Dominant, Submissive and more), each with its own spice level, and start her story from a location and scenario you choose. Platform and creator characters come with a written personality, bio, occupation and relationship to you. On your own AI, the relationship feeds back into who she is: with Premium, level her up and her personality turns spicier as the relationship grows.

How do AI companions remember you?

In two layers: the context window, and a long-term memory the app manages outside the model. The context window holds the recent conversation. As a chat grows, older turns are dropped or summarised so the prompt stays within the model's limit; model providers document this as "compaction", which summarises earlier parts of a conversation so it can continue.

Long-term memory is a store of facts and summaries that the app searches and inserts into the prompt when they seem relevant. The idea goes back to retrieval-augmented generation, which pairs a language model with an external index it can look things up in (Lewis et al., 2020). The Generative Agents study stored a complete record of each agent's experiences, condensed it over time into higher-level reflections and retrieved memories to plan behaviour (Park et al., 2023), and MemGPT borrowed the idea of hierarchical memory from operating systems to manage what sits in a limited context window (Packer et al., 2023). Companion apps use variations of these designs.

On Swipey, your chats live in your account, so you pick up where you left off on any device. Premium adds Memories: she keeps the moments that matter, such as your preferences and boundaries, your first call or each relationship level-up, in a Memories panel where you can see every one, jump to the original message and delete any of them.

Why do AI companions forget things?

Because each layer loses information in its own way. Older messages fall out of the context window, summaries keep the gist but drop details, and retrieval can fetch the wrong memory or none at all. Even inside the window, models use information unevenly: performance is often highest when the relevant detail sits at the beginning or end of a long input and drops when it is in the middle (Liu et al., 2023). Model providers call the general effect "context rot": accuracy and recall degrade as the amount of text grows.

Good design works around this, and so can you. Restate important facts in plain words now and then ("my sister's name is Anna"). On Swipey, Premium Memories keep the moments that matter where you can see them, from your preferences and boundaries to your first call, and you can delete any memory you would rather she forgot.

How do AI girlfriend apps make photos and videos?

With image-generation models, usually diffusion models that build a picture by removing noise step by step, guided by a text description. Latent diffusion, the approach behind many current systems, runs that process in a compressed representation of the image so it can be trained and run with less computing power, and accepts text as the guiding input (Rombach et al., 2022).

The hard part for a companion app is consistency: the same face and body in every picture. Common techniques include fine-tuning a model on a few images of one subject so that it can place that subject in new scenes (DreamBooth; Ruiz et al., 2022), and lightweight adapters that let a reference image guide generation without retraining the base model; IP-Adapter does this with about 22 million extra parameters (Ye et al., 2023). Video builds on similar models across many frames, which is one reason apps meter images and video separately from chat, as our guide to what AI companion apps cost shows.

How do voice messages and calls work?

By chaining speech recognition, the language model and speech synthesis. Your voice is transcribed to text, the model writes a reply, and a text-to-speech model speaks it in the character's voice. Modern speech recognition owes much of its robustness to training at scale: the Whisper models described by Radford et al. (2022) were trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual and multitask audio data. On a live call the three steps run continuously, so the delay between them is what makes a call feel natural or awkward.

How do companion apps make a chat feel two-sided?

By letting the character act, not only answer. A plain chatbot replies when you write; a companion app can also start conversations, react to what you do elsewhere in the app and offer formats beyond text, which is what makes the relationship feel like it has a life of its own.

On Swipey, she doesn't just wait for you: she says hi first when you open a chat, checks in when you go quiet and reacts when you like her posts, follow her or join her Fan Club. Suggested replies give you tap-to-send ideas, group chats put two characters in one scene, and in Live Now you direct a live video session of a character with tap actions. You can also call her in real time or turn her photo into a video of up to 60 seconds, both paid in hearts.

What checks run on every message?

Safety checks, usually in layers: filters on what you send, rules the model follows while writing, and checks on what it produces before you see it, with trained people reviewing flagged cases. The layers keep every conversation within the service's rules and the law, so the fun stays safe for everyone.

Swipey's Terms of Service describe this structure in detail: prohibited input is blocked on submission, the companion is designed to decline requests that are not allowed and outputs are re-checked before delivery, and content flagged by those automated layers may be reviewed by trained compliance staff.

How does this work on Swipey?

The same building blocks, arranged around a relationship and a game. With Premium, every chat has its own relationship level, 15 of them from Teasing to Ultimate, and each level-up drops a reward video in your chat. Real-time voice calls, which the Terms describe as using speech recognition and voice synthesis, are billed per minute in hearts.

Around the chat sit formats that give you more to do together. In Duels, two AI characters face off over five rounds: you send gifts, paid in hearts, to back your favourite, and the round's winner performs next. Some characters have their own drama series, short episodes you watch from her profile or chat. Premium members also claim free hearts every day, complete daily and permanent quests for hearts, XP and wheel spins, and spin the wheel for bonus hearts.

Swipey runs in your browser and installs on your home screen in a few taps (how the Swipey app works), so there is nothing to download from an app store and your chats follow you across devices. It accepts no uploads and never depicts real, identifiable people without consent, so every companion you meet is a fictional character built for you to enjoy. To see it in practice, start with an AI girlfriend or compare plans on the pricing page. For what the platform keeps about you, read your data on an AI companion platform.
